Getting to Work With the Right Morning Mindset

Guess who knows about all the difficult morning’s teachers have to endure as a professional casualty? I do! Till I decided to start each day with the right morning mindset.

Even in the most difficult and coldest mornings, your students expect to see you behind your desk when they troop in as you have done in the past couple of weeks, months or years. Anyway, it is probably a chore they think you enjoy doing, I’d forgive any student who thinks “wow, she does love her job”.

Yea, I do love teaching, but I wished some things could be different. Like most of my students, I wished school hours would begin from 9:00 am or 10:00 am, I wished I could have more time to mentally prepare for the day than a few minutes from when my alarm goes off. But those are all just wishes; the school system is set up to function quite effectively for both students and teachers. You just have to pull together and tailor yourself to work well with the system by finding what helps you get to work with the right morning mindset. I have not always been a morning person, but over time, I have found a reason to be a morning person. I figured, if my wishes weren’t going to be granted, I’d have to make this work and love it too.

Right now, I’m super busy, having taken up a new teaching position, and getting to know a new school. This is my sixth school after 20+ years of teaching, so when I share the following tips about how to get to work with the right morning mindset, know I have had a lot of experience. Here we go:

Match your alarm clock to your extent of lateness

After three weeks of continually being 20 minutes behind the clock when I worked my first teaching position, I decided that I had a 20-minute problem.

So, I set my alarm clock to wake me up 20 minutes earlier than usual. Actually, I set it for 25 minutes. I wanted to make sure. Expectedly, things aligned, and I started being 5 to 10 minutes early to school. Way to be an example for the kids. Gradually I upped it to one hour before school started, rather than prep after school. Way to go!

Plan out the day in your head

You could plan it out on paper too if you like, but don’t get too intense with it. Having a picture of how you want your day to flow makes the mornings on a work day exciting. Ensure to be realistic with your plans though, don’t get too flamboyant. Stack up the little wins.

Choose your morning mindset wisely

Yea, you probably have work overflowing from yesterday, but worrying about them first thing in the morning will not make them go away. Relax, you’ll get them done when you get to work. But until then, think happy stuff, appreciate life, family, a good breakfast, just savor the cool morning breeze or something.

Lay off your phone – do what makes you happy

Nearly 90% of people reach for their phones in the morning to see what they have missed and end up getting sucked into a social media or internet black hole. Admit it, once you get going with your phone, you’ll need at least 15 to 20 minutes to slow down before shutting it off to face reality.

In the mornings, you can’t afford to spend 20 minutes of your time not getting ready to come to work happy and prepare. So, lay off the phone, do something that wouldn’t make it into your schedule once your day gets going. Something you love like dancing, singing, or read a few pages from your favorite crime novel.

I hope you didn’t just go through this article I have taken out time to write without any intentions to do something differently tomorrow. You can do it, just do it!
